DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT
With Developmental editing, we can work on improving plot structure, characterization, and pace in the manuscript. We will look for inconsistencies and potential plot holes. This provides the manuscript with some guidance and direction. A developmental edit will not look at things like grammar and sentence structure.
What does a developmental edit include? With a developmental edit, you will have margin notes of anything in the manuscript that stands out or will later be referenced. At the end, you will receive a comprehensive summary of the recommended revisions for your manuscript. We can also talk over the phone to discuss the report and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
What is your turnaround time? Developmental editing may take between 3-4 weeks depending, of course, on the word count and complexity of the manuscript.
LINE EDITING
Line editing gets down to the sentence level. This normally comes after any major structural edits. Line editing makes sure your story reads smoothly by working out any awkward phrases, sentence structure, or unnatural dialogue. Most importantly, it ensures that every word has a purpose. We are looking to make sure the prose is shining and the manuscript is reading smoothly.
While line editing does get down to the sentence level, it is not to be confused with a copy edit where grammar is the focus. Line editing will fix most grammatical mistakes, but we are focusing on the prose. Think of line editing as stylistic while copy editing is more mechanical.
What does line editing include? At the end of line editing, you will have the manuscript with the suggested edits. This will look like words or sentences being cut out, sentences being restructured, comments on anything that might need to be rewritten, or clunky dialogue. We can also discuss the manuscript over the phone to address any questions or concerns.
